The staff of the Institute carries out relevant scientific programs based on the needs of the economic and social development of the country, taking into account trends in the development of world science.

Currently, the Institute is successfully developing research in the following areas:

• synthesis of monomers, polymers, ion exchange, redox, selective sorbents and membranes, polycomplexes, structural materials based on fundamental studies of catalytic polycondensation, polymerization, chemical modification and complexation;
• oxidation and oxidative ammonolysis of hydrocarbons;
• fine organic synthesis, stereochemistry, conformational analysis of polyfunctionally-substituted heterocyclic compounds in order to create new original domestic products with a wide range of biological activity for medicine and agriculture, to study the relationship of their chemical, physical and biological properties with a spatial structure;
• chemistry and chemical technology of phosphorus and inorganic phosphorus-containing materials, the creation of advanced technologies for utilization of mineral and technogenic raw materials for inorganic products, including environmentally friendly fertilizers, composite and biomaterials, corrosion inhibitors, sorbents;
• metabolism of man-made organic pollutants of soil and water; chemical and environmental monitoring of the regions of Kazakhstan.

From year 1945 to present days, 138 doctoral and 577 candidate dissertations have been defended by employees and applicants of the Institute. Were published: 161 monographs, 5 chemical dictionaries, 18 textbooks, 34 brochures, 1170 copyright certificates of the USSR, 752 pre-patents and innovation patents of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 49 patents of the USSR and the Russian Federation, 58 patents of foreign countries, and registration certificates of 9 trademarks were received .
